The technical implementation of forge couple is essentially the same as how they do it in comfy (text conditioning applied to a certain area), comfy just has a lot more ways to use it because you can stop and then continue to diffuse the latents midprocess, fuse together latent spaces, and recondition the area after a certain number of step counts. So you can do things like diffuse a character, diffuse another character in a separate latent space, then stitch together their latent spaces and then diffuse the image as a whole. Generally speaking the main advantage of comfy vs forge is that comfy offers you a lot more flexibility in exchange for taking on a lot more workflow complexity. It's still a bit clunky and not really a replacement for a model that innately knows how to do multi-character compositions but you could give it a shot. It's been a while since I used comfy, not really sure what other advanced nodes they've introduced in the meanwhile.
