A family of woodwind instruments. The most common type are soprano recorders, with low cost plastic versions frequently issued to school children since the 20th century.
It is played perpendicular to a person's lips through a mouthpiece called a fipple or block. It has a slightly tapering body with eight finger holes and can come in a variety of colors. The name comes from one of the meanings of the word record, which is "to practice a piece of music."
