Sonic Mania (ソニックマニア Sonikku Mania) is a side-scrolling platformer video game developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games. It was published by Sega and released in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. The game acts as a celebration of the Sonic series' 25th anniversary, and follows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles as they try to keep Dr. Eggman and the Hard Boiled Heavies from harnessing a mysterious new energy source, the Phantom Ruby. The story of the game also ties with Sonic Forces, released on the same year.
A definitive version of the game titled Sonic Mania Plus was released on 17 July 2018, which features the return of Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel as playable characters, as well as a 4-player Competition Mode and Encore Mode.
